This qualification is designed for those learners wishing to become a paediatric first aider in the workplace with a responsibility for the welfare of infants and children. This qualification is intended for learners already working or preparing to work in industry.

Learners gaining this qualification will know that first aid is the responsibility of everyone involved in the working environment. Topics within this course are regarded by the Early Years Foundation Stage as being important to maintaining good practice in the safe, prompt and effective treatment of injuries and ill health of infants and children who are under the care of trained personnel.

This qualification meets the requirements for Paediatric First Aid outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage 2014.

This qualification lasts for a period of 3 years, at which point candidates will be required to re-qualify by attending the full 2 day course again; however the recommendation is that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

Units include:
- Emergency Paediatric First Aid
- Managing paediatric illness, injuries and emergencies.

1] Practical observation
The practical assessment of learners for the qualification is completed throughout the course delivery. This ongoing assessment will involve learners demonstrating practical first aid skills across a number of areas. The recording of assessment will be via the HABC QCF PFA Assessment Pack – Practical.

2] Written/Oral questioning
Learners are required to answer a series of questions ensuring their understanding of the theory content is sufficient to meet the required standard. Oral questioning can be used to extract further information for these questions during the practical assessments, with the tutor documenting the responses, or when needing to supplement learners' written responses, according to individual learners' needs. The recording of assessment will be via the HABC QCF PFA Assessment Pack – Theory.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?
Upon successful completion learners may wish to continue their development via the completion of any of the sign posted qualifications/training:
• HABC Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (FAW) (QCF);
• HABC Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (FAW) (QCF);
• HABC Level 3 Award in First Aid Response; or
• HABC Level 2 Award in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillation (QCF)

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

It is advised that learners have a basic level of literacy and numeracy before enrolling onto this course.
